PC Electric Donates Soccer Equipment to Local School

The soccer program at Rougon Elementary began as an informal gathering of students at recess.  Upon finding that students had no equipment. Rougon Middle School teachers made it their goal to provide equipment for students to use.  This started as a single soccer ball donated from a teacher eager to have it out of his car's trunk

Out of this love for soccer, grew Rougon Middle School’s desire to provide a quality soccer program and the need to raise funds to purchase equipment for the students. Mr. Steven Sellers, a teacher and coach at Rougon, started a fundraising page in the hopes that he could reach his goal of $564.00. “Most of our students come from rural, low-income families, but they refuse to be defined by the obstacles they face.” Says Mr. Sellers.  “Many of my students have told me that school is their favorite place, and PE is their favorite class.”

When Jill Copeland, Manager of Member Services and Communications at PC Electric saw his plea on social media, she thought that perhaps PC Electric could help with the school’s mission.  “PC Electric is governed by seven cooperative principals, the seventh being Concern for Community” says Copeland.  “Rougon is one of our Adopted Schools and we knew that partnering with them in purchasing some of the equipment would help jumpstart a program that would not be possible otherwise.”

On August 22, 2018 Mrs. Copeland delivered two sets of soccer goals and 5 soccer balls to the school.  “The children were so excited and couldn’t wait to start using the equipment” says Copeland. Mr. Sellers was equally excited and thankful for the donation.  He said “With these materials, we will ensure that our students have access to appropriate supplies that will help create a lasting, positive impression of soccer and the lessons it offers.”  Soccer is not the only sport that is included in the new extracurricular Sports Club at Rougon, which is in its pilot year.  When students leave Rougon, they will have the skills necessary to be a productive member of the soccer team at any high school they choose to attend.
