1999 LOUISIANA AIRPORT OF THE YEAR
The Parish Police Jury and City of New Roads own a 96-acre air park that boasts a hard surfaced runway with a parallel taxi way that is 5,002 feet long and 75 feet wide. The runway and taxi way is lighted from dusk until dawn, with medium intensity lights that can be brought up to high intensity by pilots. The airport is equipped with a localizer approach system and has ODALS, PAPIS and REILS instrument approach systems. The airport has a high intensity rotating beacon. The facility consists of a terminal building, which is opened 24 hours a day, utility shed, six T-hangers, two executive hangars and tie downs for 30 aircraft. Aviation fuel, oil and other supplies are available 24 hours a day. False River Airport is a part of the National Airport System, and sees 40,000 operations (landings and takeoffs) yearly. The False River Air Park Commission maintains and operates the facility. Primarily use of the airport is general aviation with some agricultural use. Lewis Flying Service of New Roads, an agricultural operator is located on the north end of the field.
The False River Air Park has been selected by the Federal Aviation Administration as the 1999 Louisiana Airport of the Year. It was selected for its improvements made locally, the maintenance and upkeep of the airport and the airports’ owners realization of the importance of the Airpark to the local area. The airport we see today is vastly different than the airport of 1993, where improvments were needed to take the False River Air Park into the next millennium.
All facilities at the airport meet the environmental standards set by the Department of Environmental Quality.
